DETAILED ITINERARY

Cyprus is a beautiful island with a mountainous interior and according to Greek mythology, the birthplace of Aphrodite - the goddess of love. It is an island of compelling history, cultures and landscapes, scattered with ancient ruins and known for its sun-soaked beaches and warm hospitality.

Most beach resorts are on the south-west coast. Limassol is a large modern town with many wineries, an interesting Crusader history and a pleasant pedestrianised area. Medieval Kolossi Castle and the ancient amphitheatre at Kourion (Curium) are within easy reach and the Troodos Mountains are only 30 minutes away. Paphos is a popular resort with easy access to many historic sites, including the ruins of ancient tombs, fortresses, theatres and villas found in Paphos Archaeological Park. Pissouri is tucked away in unspoilt countryside between these two major towns, with a quiet 2 km Blue Flag beach. Latsi (or Latchi) is a small fishing village with a beach located on the edge of the Akamas peninsula, which is a nature reserve. It is near the Baths of Aphrodite. Kalopanayiotis is an ancient spa village on the northern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, with a natural sulphur spring. The temperature here is cooler in the evenings, but during the day in the summer it can be the same as at the coast.

At the coastal resorts many activities are available, including golf and every conceivable water sport, from scuba diving to kitesurfing and windsurfing. You can explore the interior, where wildflower-studded meadows and valleys of densely planted vineyards sweep up to pine-clad mountains offering hiking and mountain biking trails.

Coveted by conquerors, Cyprus' tumultuous past has left ancient ruins strewn across this island including Neolithic dwellings, Bronze Age and Phoenician tombs, remnants of once-mighty city-kingdoms, Roman mosaics, mountain top castles and Byzantine churches with renowned frescos. While strolling the cities you can also spot the preserved architectural legacies of the Lusignan, Venetian and Ottoman periods.

Cypriot food is delicious and the small ‘meze’ dishes are a delightful way to acquaint yourself with the local cuisine, from creamy hummus to kebabs and ‘afelia’ (marinated pork in red wine). You must also try ‘sheftalia’ (traditional grilled sausages wrapped in caul fat). Sweet deserts are also a speciality, ranging from rice puddings to gloriously sticky baklava, flavoured with almonds, rose water and pistachios.

Car hire will give you the freedom to explore more of the island’s interior. It is easy to combine one of the vibrant seaside resorts between Limassol and Paphos, with the cool serenity of the Troodos Mountains in a two-centre holiday.
