SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Madeira is a lush archipelago of four Atlantic islands, situated off the north-west coast of Africa and an autonomous region of Portugal.

The main island is green and mountainous, with high cliffs overlooking a pebbly coastline. Only 32 miles long and 12 miles wide, this incredibly beautiful subtropical island rises to almost 6,000 feet at its highest point.

Madeira is known for its warm sunshine, wonderful flora and fauna, delicious food, excellent fortified wines and local Madeira cake. The green countryside is unspoilt, with terraced farms and vineyards vying with spectacular mountains, pine forests, waterfalls and craggy cliffs.

Most hotels are in or near the capital of Funchal, which has a harbour & beautiful botanic garden. The town has many excellent restaurants offering a variety of delicious Portuguese and international cuisines.

Sometimes called ‘The Floating Island’, it has flora in abundance including orchids, mimosa, hydrangeas, hibiscus, agapanthus, camelia, arum lilies, poinsettia, pride of Madeira, red hot pokers, aloes and so much more.

You an enjoy a jeep tour of the island, a wine tour, cable car ride up the mountain, and unique local ‘toboggan ride’ down again.  Whale and dolphin watching trips are available, as well as water sports such as scuba diving, deep sea fishing and dinghy sailing.  Car hire will give you the freedom to explore more of the countryside.

The mild climate is ideal for golf, playing either at the Santo da Serra Golf Club which hosts the Madeira Open, or on the stunning 18-hole course at Palheiro, which offers dramatic views.

The interior of Madeira is ideal for walking & hiking, with over 200 ‘levadas’ (small man-made canals used for irrigation) with paths beside them. Levada walks are therefore extremely popular and can vary from easy to quite challenging, but don’t wear flip flops as the paths can get wet and slippery. Hiking boots are best.

We can arrange holidays to Madeira from Manchester, Bristol & London Gatwick, as well as Birmingham, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Stansted & Newcastle.
