Montenegro, Albania and Serbia are three beautiful, but lesser-known, Balkan Peninsula countries that were part of the former Yugoslavia, before its break-up into independent states.

Dividing east from west since Roman times, tiny Montenegro is only two-thirds the size of Wales, but is bursting with sights including majestic mountains, medieval villages and a narrow strip of breathtaking Adriatic coastline. The richness of its history can be seen in the mosaic floors of Roman villas, flamboyantly painted Orthodox monasteries, ornate Catholic churches, elegant mosque minarets and sturdy fortresses built by numerous invaders. The Bay of Kotor, resembling a fjord, is dotted with churches and fortified towns, whilst Durmitor National Park has limestone peaks, glacial lakes and the spectacular Tara River Canyon, which is home to bears and wolves. Podgorica is the capital city, whilst the virgin forests and glacial lakes of Biogradska Gora offer wonderful hiking trails.

Further south, little-visited Albania has both an Adriatic and an Ionian coastline, with its interior crossed by the Albanian Alps. It offers crumbling castles, ancient Greek and Roman archaeological sites, stunning mountain scenery and dreamy beaches. Tirana is its boisterous capital.

From the colourful capital of Belgrade to the spa towns of Sokobanja and Vrnjačka Banja, landlocked Serbia is also blessed with stunning natural wonders, including the natural stone sculptures at Devil‘s Town, Tara National Park, Djerdap National Park and the crystal clear lakes and caves of Uvac Nature Reserve. The ancient Roman palace ruin at Gamzigrad-Romuliana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can also take a train ride on the Šargan Eight heritage railway through the Mokra Gora Valley.
