Top tips when booking a skiing holiday:

  1. Look out for special offers than can make popular resorts more affordable

  2. Alternatively choose a cheaper country (or resort) that fits your budget

  3. Select catered accommodation (as eating out in resort can be very expensive) & don’t stay too far away from the slopes

  4. Check what lift pass you will need, as this will be one of your biggest outlays. Nursery slopes for beginners often don’t need one

  5. Book ahead for the best deals

  6. January & March will be cheaper than December, February mid-term & Easter

  7. Book your ski school when you book your holiday, as availability can get very tight. Afternoon lessons are usually cheaper than morning ones

  8. Come properly equipped, with a good ski helmet, goggles, gloves and boots (although skis are usually rented).

  9. All clothing must be water-resistant. Dress in layers, carry energy snacks, sunscreen, lip balm and drink plenty of water throughout the day, and especially before bed. Humidity is very low at high altitude and you will get very dehydrated, especially after a few shots.

  10. To soften your boots, stand them by a radiator or put them on a heated boot rack. Whatever you do, don’t leave them outside. In the morning do up your boots before walking to the ski lift, as this will make the plastic more flexible and your boots more comfortable by the time you start skiing.

  11. Eat your lunch later to avoid the queues, and always reserve ahead.

  12. When at après ski, use a ski lock, or split your skis with a friend, to prevent them being stolen.
